Trying Intermittent Fasting? Here's What You Need to Know

Okay, let's talk about intermittent fasting. It's one of those health trends that's super popular but also kinda confusing. Some people swear by it, others...not so much. So, what's the deal? Is it actually good for you? Or is it just another fad diet that'll fade away?

In the video below, we're going to break it all down, exploring the science behind intermittent fasting, the different ways to do it, and whether it's something you should consider trying.

We've got the new year right around the corner, and I don't know about you, but my Instagram feed is already blowing up with ads for weight loss programs and gym memberships. It's that time of year when we start thinking, "Okay, maybe I did overdo it on Thanksgiving..."

Those changes sometimes manifest themselves as health change, and we want to try the latest trend in hopes that it works for us and gets us the results we want.

The video below explains intermittent fasting in a nutshell:

  • Intermittent fasting is simply a pattern of eating that cycles between periods of eating and voluntary fasting on a regular schedule.

  • People are drawn to intermittent fasting because of some of the potential benefits:

    1. Mental sharpness (some people)

    2. Improved hormonal profile

    3. Weight loss (sort of)

    4. Reduce inflammation (autophagy!)

    5. Decreased risk of disease

  • There are three main ways to do intermittent fasting.

    • Time-restricted feeding: Eating within a specific time window, such as the 16/8 method (fasting for 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window).

    • Alternate-day fasting: Alternating between days of eating and fasting.

    • Periodic fasting: Eating normally for most day of the week and then significantly restricting your calories intake on designated “fasting days.”

  • Intermittent fasting might be a great fit for your best friend, but maybe not for you. And that's okay! The best approach is the one you can sustain, the one that helps you feel your best, both physically and mentally.

I encourage you to try it, if it fits into your lifestyle and goals for fitness!
